Some manners please

ImageI read with interest an article in the newspaper about a cafe in Pittsburgh where the owner had announced a ban on children under the age of 6. This resulted in a flurry of comments, twitters and emails. Some of them were outraged, but many of them were supportive of the decision.

At the risk of inflaming a clearly delicate topic further, I would like to add my two cents worth to this topic.

It is not children in general which are the problem but rather it is the lack of discipline and boundaries which are being taught by their parents so that we have ended up with children who on the whole have no idea of how to behave in different environments.

I believe it is the role of the parents to teach the children manners, an appropriate volume level when out in public places and to be aware of others around them and be considerate to them.

As an example I was out enjoying a meal with my husband on the weekend and there was a table with 3 couples enjoying a meal and a conversation with each other and they were completely oblivious to the fact that their combined group of children were running around the tables of other diners playing a game of tag and screaming at the top of their lungs.

I think that parents have the right to be able to go out and enjoy themselves, but I also think I have the right to enjoy a pleasant meal without enduring their noise.

So teach your children some manners and I am sure that you will be able to take them anywhere and you will be welcomed with open arms.

  1. Couldn’t agree more. Part of being a parent is being aware of what our kids are doing all the time.
